Custom Pet Portrait Gift Guide: Choose the Photo, Style and Size

A custom pet portrait can make a personal gift when it captures a pet the recipient knows and loves. Start with a recognizable photograph, choose a style they would enjoy displaying and pick a canvas size that fits their space. The largest canvas or boldest style is not automatically the best choice.

With Bondel Studio, you can try a free AI preview before choosing a version to order. Use that preview to check the pet’s likeness and the overall feel of the gift.

Match the portrait to the person

Think about how the recipient talks about their pet and the pictures they already display. Someone who loves playful color may enjoy an Abstract or Pop Art style. Someone who prefers a quieter portrait may be drawn to Watercolor or Oil True Form. Treat these as starting points and compare the available previews.

For a birthday or anniversary, the portrait can celebrate a familiar expression or a pet shared by the household. For a housewarming, consider where the recipient might actually hang it. If the gift remembers a pet who has died, read our pet memorial portrait guide before choosing the image or timing.

Choose a photo they will recognize immediately

A favorite photograph is useful only if it shows enough detail to guide the artwork. Look for clear eyes, visible markings and the expression that makes this pet feel familiar. A dramatic photograph taken from far away may be less helpful than a simple, sharp close-up.

  • Ask for the original photo rather than taking a screenshot of a social post.
  • Check distinctive features such as an uneven ear, white chest patch or unusual eye color.
  • If the tail or paws matter, choose a reference that shows them.
  • Use photos you own or have permission to use.

If you want to keep the gift a surprise, a family member may be able to help you choose a suitable reference. When uncertain, it is better to involve the recipient than to guess a detail that matters to them. See our photo selection checklist.

Consider all the pets in the household

For a household with several pets, a group portrait may be more personal than choosing one animal. Separate photographs can work as references, but check the combined preview carefully. The animals should have the intended relative size, and their markings and outlines should stay distinct.

Our multiple-pet portrait guide explains how to prepare separate photos and describe placement changes.

Choose a size that the recipient can use

Measure the intended wall if you can. For a surprise, think about the space you know they have rather than assuming a large statement piece will fit. Compare portrait, landscape and square compositions before deciding. A different shape can require a different crop; stretching the artwork can distort the pet.

Use the canvas size guide to compare the dimensions listed in Studio. Confirm the selected size and options before checkout.

Check changes and timing before ordering

If the preview needs changes, submit an Artist Refinement Request with the original order. Artist refinement is not automatically included in every Studio order, and buying a portrait as a gift does not create a separate refund guarantee. Read how refinement, approval and refunds work.

Allow for artwork review where requested, production and shipping as separate stages. Check the shipping information; if a particular date matters, contact hello@bondel.co before ordering rather than assuming an estimated delivery window is a guaranteed arrival date.

Before you finish, confirm the photo, pet’s name, any dates, selected artwork, canvas options and refinement request. Then create a Studio preview and choose a gift that feels like their pet.
